Cellphone Persuasive Writing by Aimee

Should kids have phones?

Should kids have phones? That's a good question. Some people think having a phone is bad but I disagree. I strongly believe that kids 10 and over should have a phone.

Of course there are some things bad about phones like going online and also, kids can get cyber bullied and sometimes that can affect some kids academic performance and their self confidence, etc.

But there are also so many reasons why kids should have phones such as personal safety. So many things can go wrong like fire, earthquakes, getting lost, feeling sick, etc so it is good for kids to have phone so if anything does go wrong they can ring their parents, extended family or an emergency line.

Other factors why kids should have phones:
  • Responsibility. A phone gives a kid a reason to be responsible.
  • Trust. Phones aren’t cheap so giving a phone to your kid tells them that you trust them with something of value and that you trust them to be sensible and responsible with it.
  • Social communications. Cell phones are mostly used to keep in touch with friends and family via text, calls and social media. Children use their phones to text, tweet and post their feelings and opinion on line.
  • Extended or Military families. Cell phones can help children keep in touch with their extended family like grandparents, aunties and uncles. They can also keep in touch with family in the army.
So there you have it!  Some people don't believe in children having phones, but I strongly believe that children should have phones for safety and keeping in touch with family and friends.

Rodeos Should Be Banned - Persuasive writing by Zoe

Rodeos Should Be Banned
Should rodeos be banned? Some people say rodeos are great entertainment for people and are exciting for the contestants. Others believe rodeos are inhumane and dangerous. I very strongly believe rodeos should be banned in all countries.

People who compete in rodeos voluntarily put themselves at risk but the animals have no choice. Many animals have died or suffered life threatening injuries during or before rodeos. Once, a terrified, screaming young horse burst from the chutes at the Can-Am rodeo slammed into a nearby fence, and broke her neck. This is just one of the things that can happen or has happened to animals during a rodeo.

Many animals are sold to slaughterhouses due to serious injuries during a rodeo. Dr C.G. Harber, a vet who spent 30 years as a federal meat inspector, saw animals with as much as 6-8 ribs broken and at times they were puncturing the lungs. Injuries like these usually occur when animals are thrown in calf roping events or jumped on by people on horseback during steer wrestling.

The preparation towards a rodeo is traumatizing for the animals. Normally docile animals are made to display ‘wild’ behaviour. In some cases a strap is tightly cinched around animals’ abdomens causing them to buck, which can cause painful wounds.  Electric prods and spurs are also used to rile animals. Before entering the ring, cows and horses are sometimes prodded with an electric hotshot so that the pain will enrage them.

Therefore I conclude that rodeos are brutal, heartless events. My dream is that one day someone somehow will put an end to this cruel sport.

Smoking persuasive writing by Alex L

14 February        Goal: to write an argument.
Smoking should be banned altogether!
I think smoking all over the world should be banned, for good! Smoking makes you high and relaxed, but what about the rest of the world, breathing in all of your poisonous fumes?  One day I hope Earth will be smoke free, for the best of us and Earth.

Smoking is very bad for your lungs. Every time you have a smoke you lose 10 minutes of your lifespan, your lungs will slowly but surely stop working, reason being you put about 4,000 chemicals in your lungs, including some tars which dry up. These chemicals also cause cancer. 2 million people have died from smoking in the last year.

Children whose parents smoked are twice as likely to begin smoking between ages 13 and 21 as offspring of nonsmokers. Smoking gives a bad influence to kids because they think they look cool.  Some kids also think their parents look cool, but they really aren’t. We need to help our kids.
Also smokers are really ugly. Smoking a pack of cigarettes a day makes you look 1.4 times older than non smokers, it also makes you uglier. Smoking gives you bad breath, dirty teeth, gives you a lot of wrinkles, makes you extremely ugly, and lots more side effects. Don’t make yourself look ugly!

Stopping smoking isn’t easy, but remember, you can potentially die or get your kids into drugs, and make yourself look extremely ugly.  By smoking, you’re doing something bad for yourself and for everyone else around you. You can stop, like everyone else around you, or you will die. If you are a non-smoker then help out a smoker; get him to quit. If you are a smoker then ask someone to help you stop smoking. If everyone helps out, then we could have a world without smokers, killing theirs and other people’s lives.
