Science Studies: Mini Videos

This week we are studying the saltiness of the sea and how geysers really work.  We have articles to read, research to do and videos to watch.  We are going to share our new learning and ideas making labelled, cross section diagrams or 3D models.  Our self management goal is to be working cooperatively with our buddies.

1. Short video with an explanation as to why the sea is salty.

2. American video explaining how geysers work.

Diagram of key features of one type of geyser.  The USA, Iceland and New Zealand are three of the main countries with geysers.  We are pretty special!

Science: Fire Tornado

We have been learning about fire tornadoes and how they happen.  Are they ever scary!

We have read the Forces of Nature article and then researched some famous fire tornadoes.  We found this video of an Australian fire tornado in real time which shows fire tornadoes developing.

We are creating a chart comparing weather tornadoes to fire tornadoes to help our understanding of both events.

What Causes Rain?

WHAT CAUSES RAIN?  We have been reading from the Forces of Nature text and are researching through internet sites and videos.  These are two interesting sites we have found:

Here is a video link showing how rain is caused, from the United Kingdom Met Service:

Day and Night Science

We have been learning how day and night occur and what forces cause the lengths of our days.

Check out these links explaining how day and night are caused:

Day and Night explained by a scientist. (Australian!)

Diagrams showing effects of earth's rotation. (English!)

Wouldn't it be great if we could create a video/presentation for Aotearoa showing day and night science for our part of the earth!
Now there is a challenge for you room eight students!
