Dairy Farm Science Field Trip

Last Friday, all our year eights went on a science field trip to Anna's family's farm, half way along Leedstown Road.
Mrs Taylor organized and planned the visit, and Mrs Craw and Mr Hughes arranged lots of really great learning experiences, from measuring the grass volume, milking cows, and feeding methods, through to checking the health of the cows and carrying out a pregnancy check on Anna's pet cow, Lucy!
A highlight for lots of us was working with Mr Walshe and Mr Musa, the two vets who taught us all about checking cows for pregnancy, and their hearts and stomach sounds.  We saw Lucy's calf on the screen.
We learned about planting trees to lessen the effects of the animals on the stream area and to improve the local environment.  After that we planted some trees down by the stream.  We had a teams' competition to put up break fences, and that was really fun.
We are very thankful to:  Mrs Taylor, Anna's mum and dad, (the Hughes family), Piri, their worker, Mr Taylor, Mr Martin Walshe and Mr Musa, The Vets, The Tanker Driver, Mrs Robb, Mrs Trow and Mr H Hughes, (Jordan's dad), for their help to make this trip such a great success!
Below is a random photo record of some of the highlights of the field trip...

Alec's Marcel Mouse Paragraph

Goal:  to write a very interesting, accurate paragraph to complete the:
Marcel Mouse Story...
Marcel had an excellent plan that had just popped into his mind.  Quickly he scampered over to the gigantic and fearsome black cat.  As he ran he skidded under the cat and used the cat’s silky fur to pull himself up onto the cat’s big head.  Then Marcel rode the cat like a bucking bull, using the ears to steer this monster.  Pedro quickly hopped up and limped back to the pipe under the stove.  While Marcel ran after Pedro, the cat was chasing its tail.  Then the two mice, father and son, slipped back down the pipe and into the warm, cosy nest.

Marcel Mouse Paragraph by Josh L

Goal:  To write an interesting paragraph to complete the Marcel Mouse Story…
Marcel had come up with the perfect distraction for Pedro to escape. There were a whole lot of pots and pans hanging from the bottom of the cupboard, low enough so Marcel could hit them and distract the cat. The plan worked, the cat looked away for a split second and when it turned around again Pedro was gone. When Pedro got back to where they were now living there was a sigh of relief that he came back with only a few scratches. ”We need a rule that we are not allowed go out on our own,” exclaimed Pedro.
