Dairy Farm Science Field Trip

Last Friday, all our year eights went on a science field trip to Anna's family's farm, half way along Leedstown Road.
Mrs Taylor organized and planned the visit, and Mrs Craw and Mr Hughes arranged lots of really great learning experiences, from measuring the grass volume, milking cows, and feeding methods, through to checking the health of the cows and carrying out a pregnancy check on Anna's pet cow, Lucy!
A highlight for lots of us was working with Mr Walshe and Mr Musa, the two vets who taught us all about checking cows for pregnancy, and their hearts and stomach sounds.  We saw Lucy's calf on the screen.
We learned about planting trees to lessen the effects of the animals on the stream area and to improve the local environment.  After that we planted some trees down by the stream.  We had a teams' competition to put up break fences, and that was really fun.
We are very thankful to:  Mrs Taylor, Anna's mum and dad, (the Hughes family), Piri, their worker, Mr Taylor, Mr Martin Walshe and Mr Musa, The Vets, The Tanker Driver, Mrs Robb, Mrs Trow and Mr H Hughes, (Jordan's dad), for their help to make this trip such a great success!
Below is a random photo record of some of the highlights of the field trip...

  1. What a great field trip! Huge thanks to Mrs Taylor, Mary Craw and Mr Hughes for all the time and effort they put into our day at the farm.
Also a big thank you to Mrs Robb, Mr Harry Hughes, Mrs Trow, and especially the Vets who helped make the day so interesting and gave it a careers focus as well!
